VISITORS to Ludlow are now having to pay to use town centre toilets.

But Ludlow Town Council that has introduced the charge say people are not being inconveniences.

Three years after it was first discussed, Ludlow Town Council has implemented its policy decision to increase the frequency of cleaning at Ludlow's public toilets and charge 20p to use at Castle Street toilets to help cover the costs.

The town council's new policy will help the council meet its stated aim to promote Ludlow as a clean, safe, welcoming and prosperous town for all,” said Paul Draper, Mayor of Ludlow.

“Clean well looked after toilets help to create a good impression, which goes a long way to supporting local businesses and tourism in the town.”

Town Clerk, Gina Wilding says that the initial response appears to be positive claiming that people are happy to pay 20p for cleaner facilities.

But the move to ‘pay as you pee’ has not been without problems.

Initially, the coin slots provided could not take UK currency and then the implementation of the charging was delayed because of concerns about the impact upon business in the town.

Critics have also expressed concerns that the toilets may become the target for vandals and criminals trying to steal the money.

The Ludlow Assembly Rooms, less than 100 yards from the Castle Street toilets, is a public building with conveniences that people can use.
