IT was a very different world when the Ludlow Air Cadets Squadron was set up in 1941.

The country was at war and it was not going well so getting as many new flyers as possible was important.

On Saturday June 11, 2016, 333 (Ludlow) Squadron Air Cadets will be holding an Open Day to celebrate their 75th Anniversary.

Formed by Royal Warrant in 1941, the Air Cadets initially began to train young men in the skills they would need before joining the Armed Forces during the Second World War.

The organisation has changed over the years although many of the activities and opportunities are still the same.

Cadets are able to take part in a variety of sports, study for BTEC qualifications and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

In recent years, cadets from Ludlow have received many opportunities and been able to participate in overseas camps to Cyprus, Germany and Gibraltar, sailing trips around the Scottish Coast and have taken part in the 100 mile Nijmegen Marches in Holland.

Plans are well underway for the 75th birthday party which will include photographic displays, flight simulator demonstrations and a performance from Ludlow Concert Band.

Doors open to the public from 1.00pm until 6.00pm and refreshments will be available, including a special celebration cake.

The Air Cadet Organisation is open to young people aged from 12 – 18 and adults who may be interested in becoming instructors. Ludlow Air Cadets meet at their HQ in Smithfield Car Park on Tuesday and Friday evenings from 7.00pm.
