TERRIFIC Tenbury ran in six tries to breeze through the preliminary round of the North Midlands Vase last weekend.

A convincing 38-10 victory over Dudley Wasps booked the Midlands 5 West (North) outfit a first round date at home to local rivals Church Stretton at Palmer’s Meadow this coming Saturday.

Tenbury hadn’t progressed beyond the first fixture in the Vase for a couple of seasons but their promising young side soon took charge, despite a strong start from the Black Country visitors.

Two tries apiece from fly-half Callum Spires and centre Adam West, plus three conversions from the boot of Claude Celton, had them 26-3 ahead at half-time and in the driving seat.

Though Dudley came more into the game in the second period, further scores came from Celton in the corner, following excellent play from Greg Powell, and then from replacement Owen Birks, a superb try following a crossfield kick from man of the match Spires 12 minutes from the end, to complete a satisfying afternoon’s work. Winger Celton kicked a fourth conversion to finish with a personal tally of 13 points.

In the preliminary round of the North Midlands Shield, Clee Hill were beaten 36-10 at Woodrush.

They went over the Woodrush line twice through Dan Romeo and Josh Bailey and skipper Matt Bowen admitted:?“It was a decent display, despite the result. We performed well.”

Clee Hill have a final home friendly with Bromyard this Saturday before kicking off their Midlands 3 West (North) programme at home to Newcastle on September 12.
