COUNCIL chiefs have promised that they will take a look at what has been dubbed an major accident waiting to happen in Burford.

Shropshire Council say that they will have another look at the mini island on the A456 at the junction adjacent to Tenbury Hospital.

Concerns about the island have been raised by people living in the area including Richard Huffer, who represents the area on Shropshire Council, and the town's mayor Mark Willis who compared it to ‘a pimple.’

People living near the island, fear that it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident in which someone is badly hurt or even killed.

“I am trying to persuade the authorities to recognise the dangerous nature of this ill-conceived installation before one of the numerous minor incidents, which occur on a daily basis, results in something far more serious,” said John Hughes who lives in Burford.

“It does not help that a large majority of drivers do not know the correct procedure on approaching the obstacle and I have witnessed, and recorded on video, numerous ‘near-misses’ and attended one potentially serious collision which, fortunately, resulted only in major damage to both vehicles.

“A sign fixed to a lamp-post informing of 'changes to traffic management' is just not good enough.”

Shropshire Council says it will be holding a meeting to discuss the problem and possible solutions.

“Traffic counts have been commissioned to determine vehicle speeds after the implementation of the scheme, and are now in place,” said Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s member for Highways and Transport.
