SOAP box carts return to Richards Castle this Sunday (July 12) for the annual derby with a long list of competitors both local and from further afield.

The event is run by local volunteers from Richards Castle with proceeds going to local charities.

Since the first soap box rolled down the hill in 2004 the derby has donated £70,000.

This year Ewe and You, Hope Support, and South Shropshire Home Start are the chosen charities to benefit from funds raised.

More than 30 Soap Box carts are due to descend the 550 metre course with a 50 metre descent.

Last year saw a close battle with the reigning champion C12 from Chippenham taking the win with a time of 39.25 seconds.

As well as awarding the fastest racers on the day, there is a category for novelty and innovative design.

Over the years the novelty class has seen entries including a Dalek, Marge Simpson, Fred Flintstone and Trotters Independent Traders.

This year the committee has booked food and drink stalls as well as entertainment including the Welsh Axemen, Alpaca Treks, static machinery displays, and lawn mower racing.

During the lunchtime break there will be parades of vehicles including Ludlow Castle Motor Club, Mercia Minis, Knighton Car Club and a dune buggy.

Throughout the day there will be entertainment on offer for children including a bouncy castle, face painting and Robin’s roller coast ride.

The day starts at 10am at Hanway Common. The entrance fee is £5 on the gate with people under the age of 16 free.
