PLANT and tree lovers have a chance to view some very special gardens over the coming Bank Holiday weekend.

Upper Shelderton House at Shelderton between Ludlow and Craven Arms in the south of the county, will be opening for three consecutive days from Saturday (May 23) to Monday (May 26).

This 6.5 acre garden, set in a stunning tranquil position, was originally landscaped in 1962 and is still evolving. There is an array of rhododendrons and azaleas as well as a newly designed and planted kitchen garden.

Upper Shelderton House is at Shelderton between Craven Arms and Ludlow off the A49. Admission is £4 for adults but is free for children.

There will also be two opportunities to visit the historic Walcot Hall estate, at Lydbury North, near Ludlow, over the bank holiday on Sunday and Monday between1.30pm and 5.30pm.

Overlooking the mile long lake, visitors can stroll around Walcot’s arboretum with colourful displays of trees and rhododendrons, originally planted by Lord Clive of India’s son, Edward. There is also a walled kitchen garden, dovecot, ice-house, tin chapel, Russian wooden church, grotto and fountain, and newly restored water garden.

Walcot Hall is at Lydbury North on the B4385 Craven Arms to Bishop's Castle road.

Radnor Cottage in Clun is open on Tuesday (May 26) on the B4368 one mile east of Clun.
