VE Day has been marked in south Shropshire today.

There was a short act of remembrance earlier today at the Town War Memorial for VEDay 70 in the South Porch of St Laurence’s Church.

Then this afternoon at the war memorial in Market Square mayor Paul Draper read out Winston Churchill’s famous speech formally announcing the end of the war in Europe.

After this a minute's silence was observed.

Meanwhile, Clee Hill and District Royal British Legion held a short service at St Peter's Church, Clee Hill, based on the original service given 70 years ago in Westminster Abbey.

This will be followed later this afternoon by a old fashioned knees up in the village hall at Clee Hill from 5pm.

All are welcome to attend.

Fancy dress in the style of 1940s is encouraged, with prizes for best adult and child costumes.

There will be music, singing, traditional wartime buffet, prizes and celebration.

“We are proud to be marking this important event and invite one and all to join us. We plan a celebratory upbeat afternoon in the style of the original VE Day parties,” said Fay Vass, secretary of the Royal British Legion Branch.
