STRONG support services have helped students in Ludlow make progress with their careers.

That is the official verdict on the way the Herefordshire and Ludlow College helps its students make choices about their future.

The college's Learner Services department has been awarded full marks in the Matrix Accreditation for Information, Advice and Guidance.

The Matrix Standard is the framework for organisations to assess their information, advice and guidance services.

Mandy Davis, head of learner services, said: "I am immensely proud of my team in achieving this highly regarded standard as this clearly demonstrates how we support our learners in their choice of career, learning, work and life goals.”

The inspection included interviews with more than 50 staff and students across all three college sites in Hereford, Holme Lacy Campus and Ludlow.

The report noted that the College’s Learner Service’s department; “demonstrated that it continues to meet all aspects of the matrix Standard demonstrating a commitment to providing a high quality service to students across a range of provision.”

It also noted, “The merger with Ludlow College has enabled more effective use of central services resources across the three college campuses, with shared systems. The key focus on learners has led to increased retention rates at Ludlow, with more effective use of resources ensuring robust initial information, advice and guidance.”

Ludlow College A Level student Emily Ratcliffe said: "The staff here have been really supportive especially leading up to UCAS applications. You don’t feel apprehensive about approaching any of them for a chat.

“The whole UCAS process has been a lot easier just knowing that someone friendly is there to help.”

Ian Peake, HLC’s principal, said:“At a time when serious questions are being raised about the availability and quality of education and careers advice and guidance in schools and colleges, I am delighted that we have once again secured the matrix quality standard.

"This prestigious award is in recognition of the excellent work of my colleagues who provide outstanding guidance and support to young people and adults, enabling them to make the right decisions contributing to fulfilling and productive careers.”
