Bishop’s Castle

WALKING BACK TO HAPPINESS - Do you remember the singer Helen Shapiro? Her hit song W alking Back to Happiness sold over a million copies in the early Sixties. Although born into the Jewish faith, Helen became a Christian and founded Gospel Outreach in the year 2000. A film called The Story of Helen Shapiro follows the course of her life and it is showing at the Green Methodist Chapel, near Bishop’s Castle next Thursday, November 20, at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come along.

GARDEN WINNERS - Kevin and Jenny Ellis of 24 Corrick’s Rise were the 2014 winners of the Bishop’s Castle Civic Society award for the best wayside garden in the town. They were presented with the Shropshire Star Cup at an awards evening on November 4 in the Methodist Hall. Rita Coxall and Roger and Sheila Morris were runners-up. Other prize winners were: Lee White at the Kings Head winner of the Dr and Mrs Penney Rose Bowl for the best hanging baskets; Alan and Geraldine Burkill of Llanserth winners of the Kenneth Lewis Cup for the best kept private premises; Liz Davies owner of the shop ‘Eliza Scott’ winner of the Robert Gwyther Cup for the best kept business premises; Sarah Woof and Pete Keeley winners of the Mawdsley Cup for the best new work or renovation in the town. The couple run the garden shop ‘Buttercup’.

EARTH AND SKY SONGS - Two well- known singers and songwriters come together for an acoustic concert in Bishop’s Castle town hall on Sunday at 2.30pm. Susan Raven and Brian Copsey perform Songs from the Earth and the Sky with support from the dance band Bellamonda. Tickets cost £6 on the door, or £5 in advance from Art and Artisan Books. ROBINS AND REINDEERS - Learn to make a 3D Christmas robin or a reindeer at a craft workshop in Bishop’s Castle town hall on Monday at 6pm. Clare Linford will show you how to use a technique called needle felting. SENIOR CITIZENS BINGO - The next meeting, today, should be fun. Tim Wood is bringing bingo to Clun senior citizens at Haslehurst Community Centre from 3pm.

NEWCASTLE GARDEN SOCIETY - Newcastle Garden Society’s next meeting is today at Newcastle Community Centre, at 7.30pm. It promises to be a fascinating evening. Bugs, Beasts and Birds, Bringing a Garden to Life is the subject of Jenny Steel’s talk. Passionate about wildlife gardening, Jenny has written 11 books, is a gardener, adult education tutor, former nursery owner and photographer as well as making appearances on many TV programmes, including BBC2’s How Does Your Garden Grow. The AGM takes place at 6.30pm before the talk.

PROMISE AUCTION - Rachel Lewis’ promise auction to raise funds for her trip to volunteer in Thailand is tomorrow. Come to Clun Memorial Hall for fun evening with food available. Promises include hot air balloon ride, meals out, beauty vouchers, cakes and half a day’s labour.

FAIRTRADE GROUP - Quiz the experts on Fairtrade. UPPER CLUN COMMUNITY WILDLIFE GROUP - Wildlife Group are holding a public meeting next Thursday, November 20, at Newcastle Community Centre, 7.30pm. They will be celebrating iconic species and wildlife sites and announcing results of bird, plant and butterfly surveys for 2014 as well as planning for next year. Find out how you can help and hear about the events for new members and plans for conservation of species and sites. You do not need to be an expert. The group are gathering information through local people, so anyone can join in, they work closely with Land, Life and Livelihoods, Clun and District Branch of Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shropshire Hills AONB.

THEATRE IN CLUN - Clun Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS) are performing a double bill this weekend by two acclaimed playwrights.

Eastham

MEETING - Parish council will be meeting November 25, 7.30pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend. Parish council had a meeting last week to discuss plans for a new dwelling at Eastham Grange. Councillors agreed to support the application. TENBURY AND DISTRICT MUSEUM SOCIETY - Following a short AGM at the Pump Rooms next Thursday, November 20, 7pm for 7.30pm, the society is delighted to present The Long Weave, a special talk by Mr Charles Talbot, Chairman of Trustees of the Museum of Carpet, Kidderminster. He will be giving an account of the dedication of the group who had the vision to preserve the history of this carpet town. No admission charge, refreshments will also be served. The Strettons

DRAMA - Local drama group, Dorrington Players, will be presenting The Time of My Life by Alan Aykbourn directed by Peter Thorpe, at the Silvester Horne Institute from today to Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets being sold through John Thomas Florists and Burway Book, £7 for Thursday and £8 for Friday and Saturday nights. Some may be available at the door.

LIBRARY - Local and family history sessions at the library are 1pm-4pm on Thursdays and volunteers are on hand to help if required. There will be a volunteer outreach session offering advice tomorrow 10am-12 noon, and on Tuesday another Rhymetime session will take place 10.30am-11am for the under-threes.

SMALLHOLDERS - Shropshire Smallholders will meet at Leebotwood village hall tonight for talk by Steve Jones of Cwm Harry, a diverse team of specialists in growing vegetables the permaculture way, waste reduction, biological water treatment, and also community growing and affordable housing. There will be a members’ exchange time for items wanted or for sale and a members’ sales table for smallholder produce. Two new members have been welcomed. ENGAGING ISSUES - Tuesday there is another talk at the URC Church. This time, Chris Walker is the speaker on the subject of ‘Exploring the Darkness’, stories of death and mortality. Chris has been interested in issues around the dying since working in St Christopher’s Hospice with Dame Cecily Saunders in the late 1960s. Talk starts 7.30pm, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions. Admission £3, all are welcome.

CAMERA CLUB - The Longmynd Camera Club will meet at the URC hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm and members will be presenting their photographs and dpi’s to be entered in the second competition of the series which is an open subject. Judy Mainwairing will be on hand to judge the entries. Tony Broom gave a presentation of his black and white pictures captured with his Mamiya 645 camera, and also explained the use of infrared film and filters. A vote of thanks was given for his interesting talk and display of pictures. Visitors are always welcome at any of the club meetings.

TREE GROUP - The next meeting of the Tree Group will take place on Wednesday at the Methodist Church starting at 7.30pm. The speaker for the evening will be Archie Miles, a specialist tree writer and photographer who will take as his subject ‘Hidden Trees of Britain’ when he will reveal with photographs some of the country’s largest, oldest, rarest and even the weirdest of trees which are often found off the beaten track. Some of his books will be on display. Admission for non-members is £3 and all are welcome.

HOPE HOUSE - A sale of produce held at recent Harvest supper event in Little Stretton village hall raised £147.75 for Hope House Hospice, thanks to those who supported.

SCHOOL NEWS - The new ‘hill’ in St Lawrence’s playground has been named and the school was delighted with the number of entrants in the competition. A small prize has gone to the winner. The children have completed their art work for the Christmas cards, and year six pupils have assisted in the flag planting at the cemetery. Church Stretton School’s year nine boys’ football team has claimed another victory towards the National Cup. Principal has hosted another afternoon tea to celebrate achievements of students both in and out of school, and the school has now taken over responsibility for Stokesay Primary School as a sponsored Academy. PTA hosts a craft fair on Saturday with over 68 stalls. Both local schools will be packing up shoe boxes and would accept items which can be included. On the sporting front, St Lawrence’s Primary School pupils have competed in cross country and Tag Rugby. The boys’ and girls’ football teams both progressed to the final round of the ESFA Cup with the girls coming top of the group and the boys not conceding a goal. The girls B team also had a chance to play. The under eleven girls and boys teams played in the finals but both teams narrowly missed the chance to represent Shropshire in the regional final. Looking forward, there will be a new football club offered to year one and two. Classes five and six have taken part in an Anglo-Saxon workshop and 20 pupils have visited the town’s war memorial and cemetery to plant flags as part of a ceremony of remembrance, and following this, the wartime history of Church Stretton will feature in the new curriculum. The Friends of the School thank everyone for their support of the bonfire night barbecue which raised around £850 towards the playground improvements, also thanks to those who have ordered Christmas cards designed by the children.

THANK YOU - Acton Scott PCC would like to say a huge thank you to all who attended and supported the Harvest service, Harvest supper and promise auction at Acton Scott on October 10. Many local people and businesses donated wonderful ‘promises’ which were auctioned on the night, making the evening a great success and raising £439.50 for St Margaret’s Church. For the Harvest service the church was beautifully decorated with autumn fruits and floral displays and the service was led by Tim who preached on the theme of super-sized fast food outlet meals and its biblical equivalent of the three loaves and fishes. A special thank you goes to all who helped put on the superb ploughman’s style supper.

CHURCH NEWS - Christingles will be made on November 21, from 3.45- 4.45pm and all are invited to go along to help. Tea and cake can be enjoyed afterwards. The Christingle service will be on November 22, at 4pm before the Christmas lights are switched on.

SWITCH ON - The Christmas lights will be switched following the Christingle service at St Laurence’s Church on November 22. During the day there will be Christmas stalls in Church Way, High Street, Sandford Avenue to Lion Meadow with the road closed from 7am-6pm. Santa will walk up to the Square at 4.45pm to help turn on the Christmas lights.

FROST FAIR - Mayfair will be hosting a frost fair from 10am-3pm on November 22.

EXHIBITION - Of work by local artists at All Stretton village hall on November 23, 10.30am-4.30pm. Refreshments, available, donations to Hope House Children’s Hospice.
