THE company chosen to run Tenbury Swimming Pool for the next 10 years has jumped into the deep end with the commitment of a £360,000 investment in the facility.

A public meeting has been called by Tenbury Community Pool Limited which owns the facility to will give people the chance to have their say on its future.

This will be the chance for all pool and gym users to meet Freedom Leisure, the newly appointed contractor to run the pool that has made the six figure commitment.

The future of the facility has been secured for the immediate future with the news that Malvern Hills District Council has committed to a grant to the facility of in the order of £70,000 a year.

Freedom Leisure, which was selected by the Tenbury Community Pool Ltd to run the pool under a 10 year arrangement, will spend most of its investment in the first year.

“It is very important that the local community recognise that Tenbury Pool and Gym is owned by the local community and it is the local community, through Tenbury Community Pool, that will need to ensure the future success of the pool,” said Val Hayllor, a volunteer director of Tenbury Community Pool Limited.

“This is a very exciting time for the community. At the start of the year Malvern Hills District Council were threatening to stop the lifeline grant funding for the pool. Through our close work with Malvern Hills District Council and the support of our local councillors we have secured a further five years grant, albeit at a lower level than previously given.

“Tenbury Community Pool Limited selected Freedom Leisure as they provided a 10 year financial plan that shows from year six the pool should be able to operate without grant support. We want to work with Freedom Leisure to make sure this happens, but we need the support of the local community to help us achieve this.”

“Freedom Leisure brings a wealth of experience and will also be investing £364,140 in the first five years to improve the facility. Most of this money will be spent in first year upon improving the energy efficiency of the building and re-equipping the gym. There will also be improvements carried out to the changing rooms and the reception.”

The public meeting will be next Thursday (November 19) at the Masonic Lodge in Market Square in Tenbury starting at 7pm.
