CHURCHGOERS in south Shropshire have been praised after coming to the aid of victims of domestic violence.

The South Shropshire Domestic Violence Service issued an urgent plea for blankets, bedding and toiletries after running low on the supplies it gives women and children who use a refuge in the area that is run by South Shropshire Housing Association (SSHA).

Churches Together Around Ludlow (CTAL), an umbrella group representing residents from all denominations in the town and surrounding villages, came to the rescue after spreading the word to its members.

“The refuge was inundated with blankets and other donations following the plea. We were overwhelmed by the support and kindness of the local community,” said Wendy Bullman, the south Shropshire domestic violence services manager.

“We had such a positive response from so many organisations and individuals that we had to put a stop on the SOS because we were running out of space to store things.

"In fact we had so much given to us, we were able to share items with Ludlow Foyer, a housing project that provides accommodation for young people aged 16 to 25, which is also run by SSHA.

As well as supporting women and children in the refuge, the South Shropshire Domestic Violence Service also helps families living independently in the community.

The South Shropshire Refuge has provided a place of safety for 379 women and 430 children from various locations since it opened more than 10 years ago, with even more women supported in a variety of other ways. Nationally, two women a week die from domestic violence.

Neil Richardson, chair of CTAL, said that the group was pleased to have been able to help.

“We are glad to be involved in working in a variety of ways to alleviate poverty in Ludlow and south Shropshire,” he said.

Anyone who is interested in making a financial donation to support women and children living in refuges or the community should contact the south Shropshire service on 0300 303 1191 or the north Shropshire service on 07921 409768.
