THE recently selected Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Ludlow used the platform at the party conference in Glasgow to draw attention to the problems of young people in college.

Charlotte Barnes, who represents Bishops Castle on Shropshire Council, delivered a plea calling on the Government to make public transport free to all 16-to-18 year olds who are attending further education or training.

"The key point here is that it will soon be obligatory for all 16 to 18 year olds to either attend schools or training,” she said.

“Right across England this will hit rural families particularly hard. In Shropshire we are threatened with £900 bills for each pupil attending sixth form. If we are obliging young people to do this then it is only fair that their travel is either free or charged at a very low cost."

After the debate, the ministers responsible, Baroness Kramer and David Laws MP, agreed to review the situation with regard to rural 16 to 18 year olds.
