SOME of the history of a south Shropshire beauty spot will be revealed soon.

‘Knowbury on Titterstone Clee’ is a talk to be given by John Hughes at Knowbury Memorial Hall tomorrow (Friday October 10).

He will describe how Knowbury village developed close to but separate from the great mineral working centre that was Clee Hill at that time.

Clee Hill's past is well known - the dead quarry workings on Titterstone's summit bear witness to the sheer scale of the industry and the people who laboured there.

But less well-known is the extent of activity in Knowbury for the years have covered many industrial scars but at one time or another there has been: coal digging both deep mines and bell pits; iron smelting; brick making; lime burning; tile making; and supporting tram roads, all within a mile of the church.

John Hughes was born in the village more years ago than he would care to admit. A keen local historian, he grew up in Knowbury and has always lived in the village or nearby.

He knows who lived where and which tump in a field was a spoil heap – or a pit head – or house platform.

Further information or tickets at £5 each are available from John or Annie Felix at Redthorpe Villa in Knowbury They can be contacted there or on 01584 890638 or by email on johnannieandjake@hotmail.com.

A bar will be available and the evening is to be held in aid of Midlands Air Ambulance.
