MARJORIE Wait, Ludlow’s 100-year-old former teacher, had her card from the Queen with her when she held at audience at the town’s Royal British Legion.

She is the oldest member of the Legion in the town having joined in 1944 and was at the club’s base in Victory House to meet well wishers.

Although she retired in 1975 among those who came to see her were former pupils. Miss Wait taught at Ludlow School where she was the deputy head teacher for more than 30 years.

Her typical day can involve getting up at six in the morning and undertaking a day of activities including going shopping on her own and attending meetings of various groups that she belongs to.

She was a special guest at the awarding of the Freedom of Ludlow to the Royal Welsh Regiment and ended the day at a talk at the British Legion before going to bed and getting up early the following morning for church.

Miss Wait puts her long and healthy life down to ‘inheriting the right genes’ and taking regular exercise.
