Bayton

FESTIVAL OF CHURCHES - Bayton Church is holding an open weekend in the church on Saturday and Sunday, 11am to 4pm.This is the second year that Bayton have set up a display. It is very interesting to look at the history of the church, the links with Shakenhurst and village history. Details of men named on the War Memorial will be on display, can you add any details to the information we already have? We also need to know who the people are in pictures of old Bayton, can you help? Please come along and have a look, light refreshments will be available.

HARVEST SUPPER - The harvest supper is being held on October 4 in Bayton village hall. Tickets are £7 each and can be obtained from Sue Burrows 01299 832722. All welcome.

JUNIOR HOCKEY ACADEMY - Children aged four to 11 are welcome to join Bishop’s Castle Junior Hockey Academy which meets every Tuesday afternoon at Teme SpArC in Bishop’s Castle. YOGA CLASS - Bishop’s Castle yoga teacher David Hedge has five yoga classes a week in Bishop’s Castle, four at the Community College and one in the Methodist Hall. Classes run in the Fletcher Room of the Community College Monday and Tuesday at 7.30pm, and Friday at 10.30am and 1.30pm. There is also a class Tuesday at 10am in Bishop’s Castle methodist hall. David is starting a new class at the Silvester Horne Institute in Church Stretton, Tuesday at 1.30pm,open to all. £6 a session. David has taught yoga for 14 years and is a member of the British Wheel of Yoga. SCHOOL CLUBS AND VISITS - Children at Bishop’s Castle Primary School clubs include multi-sports, archery, netball, cross country, art and the school choir. This month year six pupils will be visiting Pembroke while class three are off to Liverpool. October visits to Attingham Park, Staffordshire Regimental Museum have been arranged for the older pupils, with classes one, two and three going to see The Elves and the Shoemakerat the SpArC Theatre, Bishop’s Castle.

LIVE LATIN JAZZ - Enjoy an evening of live Latin Jazz at the SpArC Theatre, Bishop’s Castle tomorrow at 7.30pm. Heads Southcombine Afro-Cuban and Latin rhythms with tuneful melodies in a repertoire of original compositions and classic arrangements. The five piece band is led by pianist/composer John Harriman and features jazz trumpet, percussion, drums and double bass. Think Buena Vista Social Clubin a smaller package.Tickets £10 and £6. FOLK DANCE ALPHABET - English folk dancing returns to Lydham village hall with meetings twice a month at 8pm. Clows Top Gardening Club

TIM NASH AND FRIENDS - The Old Surgery Gallery has invited the artist Tim Nash back for his annual Tim Nash and Friends’ exhibitionwhich opens next Thursday, September 25, and runs for four weeks. Tim has invited his friends, Brian Fletcher, David Harban, Paul Hipkiss, Peter Shread and David White to show alongside him. The gallery is open seven days a week, 10am-5pm.

NEWCASTLE GARDEN SOCIETY - Duncan Coombes, lecturer in decorative horticulture at Pershore College, will talk about the shaded garden tonight at Newcastle Community Centre at 7.30pm. Duncan’s wide interest in plants has taken him to many regions of the world to see plants in their natural surroundings, and he is well qualified to talk about plants that love shade.

ANGLICAN VOICE - Two occasions to hear Professor Andrew Simms speak on the subject “Is faith a delusion?” have been arranged to take place at the Longmynd Hotel. Lunch Tuesday is at noon for 12.30pm, and dinner next Thursday, September 25, at 7pm for 7.30pm again at the Longmynd Hotel. Tickets to either of these talks cost £13.50.

SCRAPPIES - Scrappies Scrap Store welcomes donations of sweet biscuit wrappers of any brand, used pens including highlighters and felt tips, any brand of baby wipe packets, used ink cartridges, wearable jumble, mobile phones, laptops and tools for the Tools for Self Reliance collection. Please drop off any items at the store or at Castle House, Clun if more convenient. The store has equipment which can be hired including, badgemaker, bunting, charity collection boxes, croquet set, fluorescent jackets, various equipped games bags, play parachutes, tug of war ropes, sports day sacks, skittles, splat the rat, folding chairs and tables and a guillotine. The Scrappies team of local artists and craft workers also offer a variety of educational, fun, craft workshops demonstrating the endless possibilities of using recycled materials. These workshops can be booked and can be themed to suit any objective or curriculum. Scrappies would also like to hear from anyone who can volunteer to help out in the Scrapstore on a regular or casual basis. Please pop in and see what this entails.

SCHOOL NEWS - Church Stretton School held a summer school for new year sevens, which was attended by over 30 youngsters during the last week of the summer holidays. Geography trip to Borth is one of the first field trips of the new term and there will be a KS4 evening. St Lawrence’s Primary School is delighted with the playground tidy up. The Friends are organising a welcome walk tomorrow, when families can enjoy a relaxed walk around Stretton with a quiz trail to follow. The walk will be suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs and everyone can return to the school for a drink and hot dog. A charge to cover expenses will be made. There is also an invitation to parents to take part in a mud run in November to raise funds for St Lawrence’s.

DORRINGTON PLAYERS - Local drama group, Dorrington Players, is searching for a young male actor to take part in the autumn production. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the production will be staged from November 13-15 .

CARDIFF HALF MARATHON - Shane from Kaboodle is taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon October 5, to continue the funding for a Nepalese teacher and raising funds for new school project in Nepal which is due to open next year. To support his efforts please pop in to the shop and put some coins in the collection box.

LONGMYND HIKE - The Longmynd Hike will place on October 4 and 5, and is based at Church Stretton School. The next pre-hike meeting will take place on Sunday at 8pm. At the previous meeting the new registration system was discussed and this should reduce the administration involved with non-starters. A new marquee will be purchased for one of the checkpoints. Volunteer check point staff will be on duty and mini-buses and drivers available for transport. At the next meeting the first aid arrangements will be put in place and the first aid kits checked.
