Bitterley WI

DRAWING was the theme at the July meeting of Bitterley WI. After the president had welcomed members, the minutes were read. Ideas for next year’s programme are welcome, so get your thinking caps on. Members then had the chance to show off their artistic skills with the help of Malcolm Whittall, the guest speaker, who is a cartoonist. So with pencil and paper it was head down, copy him as he drew a cartoon. Some of his cartoons were on display. He was thanked for his entertaining talk. Hostesses for the evening were Pam Collier, Janet Morgan and Sandra Roberts. Although August is a holiday month, members will be going ten-pin bowling and for an evening meal at the Hickory Stick.

The next meeting is on September 18.

Alf Jenkins will be the guest speaker on Wagons to Wheelbiers. The compe tition is something beginning with N.

On a summer day at the end of July, members and friends spent the day at the Cotswold Farm Park, run by the Rare Breed Survival Trust, but to many it is Adam’s Farm. The park covers many aspects of farming, including some conservation with woodlands and a pool habitat for many small water creatures and plants. The differ ent breeds of rare animals were in small paddocks so that visitors could see them. During the walk around the park people could see the cattle and sheep handling facilities. In the farm building, children were able to handle the smaller animals. There was even sheep shearing to show the different stages of wool production. The park caters for educational school trips and has a children’s playground. Members had plenty to see and do with a mixture of fun, entertainment and education.

Clows Top and District Gardening Club

AUGUST is traditionally the month for a well-earned break, if you’re going away make sure that the garden can cope with the summer heat. If you can, ask a neighbour or friend to call in to water the plants outdoors, not forgetting the indoor plants too. At the June meeting a local gardener gave a talk on his garden. Julian Bennett, Phipps Farm, Mamble, had plenty of photos showing the before and after results. This is a ongoing project so there is more to come in the future. Many thanks to Julian for the short notice as the advertised speaker was unable to attend due to illness. It was also the clubs rose and sweet pea show. Some good speci mens were entered. Many thanks to Anne for judging. The results were: 1st Austin Fletcher and best exhibit; 2nd Dot Cowdell; 3rd Jackie Mapes.

If you are not a keen gardener but a keen garden lover, then don’t be afraid to come along, the group is a garden club not a horticulture socie ty.

The Clows Top summer show will be on Saturday starting at 2pm, at Clows Top Victory Hall.

The admission will be £1.

There will be horticultural exhibits, refreshments, tombola, raffle, plant stall and other side shows.

The cups will be presented at 4pm followed by the drawing of the raffle.

Schedules are available from Clows Top Post Office, Forest Stores and Mawley Oak Garage.

Please forward all enquires to Marion Wilson on telephone 01299 270475.

Stall holders are welcome to pre- book with Marion for available car parking which is of limited availability at the rear of the hall.

The next meeting on August 27, is by Mike King who will give a talk entitled Carnivorous Plants.

Diary Dates: n September 24, 60 years of wildlife photography, John Robinson.

  • October 22, I’m not much good at gardening, David Morgan.
  • November 26, Hartlebury Common, Dr Joy Rooney.

The Clows Top and District Gardening Club meets on the fourth Wednesday in the calendar month at Clows Top Victory Hall.

Longmynd Vintage Vehicle Club

LOCAL vintage vehicle enthusiasts and members of the Longmynd Vintage Vehicle Club have recently donated £250 to the Bishops Castle First Responders.

Club chairman Karen Bavastock said: “The club nominates local charities each year and fundraises as part of its activities through vehicle runs, socials, quizzes, draws and other money mak ing events.

“The money raised is donated to chari ties nominated by the club at the AGM.

“We decided that we would set up a kitty at Union Street Garage in Bishops Castle where the vehicle used by the First Responders in Bishops Castle is filled up with diesel and have made £250 available to sponsor the vehicle.”

In previous years the club has sup ported the Midlands Air Ambulance, Bishops Castle Heritage Resource Centre and other local charities.

This year’s other charities are the About Music Project in Bishops Castle and the Grange Road Community Centre Lunches for All, both deserving local charities.

The club also funded a full pack which is carried by a First Responder, along with a defibrillator which is used local ly.

Karen went on to say: “I am really proud of what the club has achieved over the years in giving to local chari ties.

“We are a much smaller committee now but all are committed to trying to raise money for local charities.

“At our AGM we will be looking at the charities we will be sponsoring in our next year.

“If there is a small club or charity locally that would like some support please let us know and we can put it to the club and see if there is some sup port we can offer.”

Recently the club held a successful vintage vehicle run and proceeds from that will be added to the kitty for this year to be given out to local charities.

At the club’s next meeting on September 10, starting at the earlier time of 7pm, the First Responders will be holding a first aid training session.

Rosemary Griffiths, vice-chairman of the club said: “We held a first aid ses sion a couple of years ago and all those who attended thoroughly enjoyed it so we are really pleased to be able to welcome back the First Responders who have agreed to run another session on emergency first aid.”

The club’s AGM will be held on October 8 at the Inn on the Green, at 7.30pm.

Bishop’s Castle Community College

THE Community College Bishop’s Castle hosted two teachers from their link school in Tanzania this half term.

During their stay Mr Mzee and Madame Mbele supported and observed lessons, delivered lessons and also visited two of the College’s feeder primary schools.

Madam Mbele is Head of French at Macechu School so she spent most of her time alongside Mrs Hughes in French lessons.

The two teachers had already met through Skype and the students from both schools had also communicat ed through Skype.

Mrs Mbele brought with her some cards and letters that her students had written addressed to the year seven students.

The students now regularly commu nicate through Skype and through letter writing.

This helps their French language as well as raising their global awareness by learning more about the ways of life of people in Tanzania and the importance of the French language to many African countries.

Mr Mzee, the headteacher from Macechu School is a physicist, and he spent much of his time in the sci ence department.

This is his second visit and a science project has been running simultane ously between the two schools over this time.

The exchange is financed by the British Council’s Connecting Classrooms programme which has been successful running in the col lege for the last three years.

Behind the scenes, plenty is happen ing to strengthen the partnership fur ther.

There are plans for regular Skyping to take place over the coming year between staff and students. This offers a great opportunity for Community College students to talk to Macechu students – to learn more about each other’s lives, or share information related to their lessons; it is also an opportunity for the staff from the two schools to share ideas.

In addition, Mr Doust, the head teacher from the Community College Bishop’s Castle will be visiting Macechu School in the autumn term.
