LUDLOW men who died fighting the First World War will be remembered at two special events.

A service of remembrance will be held at St Laurence’s Church on Sunday (August 3) at 11.30am and the following day (Monday August 4) a vigil takes place at the church from 9pm to 10pm.

One of the special features of the service on Sunday is that three young people will read the names of the 138 men from Ludlow who died in the war to illustrate how they are honoured by today’s young generation.

They are army cadet Marcus Griffiths, air cadet Joanne Povall, and Chloe Powell-Bevan, of St. Laurence's Church Choir

The mayor and town councillors will attend along with other citizens of the town to begin the four year commemoration of the war.

Wreaths will be laid in the South Porch and silence will be observed. The town bugler will play the Last Post and Reveille. The Royal British Legion and other local organisations will also take part.

All are welcome to the candlelit vigil. This will anticipate by one hour the vigil taking place at Westminster Abbey later that evening.

There will be simple prayers for peace, memories of the First World War in Ludlow, prose and poetry written during the war itself .

As the darkness grows candles will be lit by those present to look forward to a future without conflict.
