ONE of the Ludlow women who took part in the Race of Life is not finished with physical activity.

On Saturday (July 19) Joyce Hughes, 75, is set to parachute out of a plane, jumping from 14,000 feet to raise funds for Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Retired Joyce describes her life in Ludlow as 'lovely and stress-free' but she enjoys doing something out of the ordinary from time to time. She has already flown in a hot-air balloon, climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge, and walked across a glacier in Canada.

Now she will tackle her biggest challenge yet - an awe-inspiring assisted tandem skydive. For this feat she will be joined by her daughter Meg, who will be jumping solo.

Joyce has been itching to have a go at the extreme sport for several years and she decided it would be the perfect opportunity to raise money for the Assembly Rooms, where she regularly volunteers.

“I spend quite a lot of time stewarding for films and shows, while also helping out at other fundraising events” she said.

“It is a wonderful facility for the town and it plays such an important role in the community. Any money I can raise by doing this jump will go towards a great cause.”

Those wondering what daredevil Joyce has planned after her skydive can be assured she will not be relaxing for long. Later this summer, she will be heading to north Wales to ride the longest zip-wire in Europe with her daughter and grandchildren.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Joyce has decided to organise this fundraising event,” said Selina Cross of Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

“She’s full of energy and enthusiasm, and is living proof that age is only a number. I’m sure everyone will be willing her on when the big day comes.”
