THE British championship event in something that most people think of as something we do for fun on a beach will be taking place in south Shropshire.

For the seventh consecutive year Shropshire will be holding The British Stone Skimming Championships.

This will take place on Sunday June 29 at Walcot Lake, Lydbury North, between 12noon and 5pm.

Entry on to the field is free and then it will cost £3 for each set of four skimming stones or £2.50 for those under 16. Other competitions will be 50p a go.

There will be the established old favourites of Stone the Crows, Roll the Stone, Pile the Stones, No Stone Unturned, Stones in the Olympic Rings, Stones in the Boxes, plus a new Football World Cup themed game.

Prizes for all competitions are simple hand painted stones as all proceeds will go to Prostate Cancer UK.

There are four age categories for both male and female skimmers so it is a day for all the family.

Last year saw glorious weather so the scene was set with plenty of picnics on the lakeside.

Again this year there will be a bar and refreshment stand.

The 2013 winners of the Men's competition, Dave Sealey from Malvern, and the Ladies' contest, Emma Ruffy from Kidderminster, set new records of 87 metres and 40.5 metres respectively.
