TWO pupils from a school near Tenbury Wells have sailed off with medals after competing in a national competition recently.

Edward Garnier, age 12, and Ed Rose, age13, who both attend Abberley Hall School in Great Witley, secured some of the top places at the 2014 National School Sailing Association inland championships.

Hosted by Datchet Water sailing club near Windsor, around 50 boats took part in the two-day event.

"It was a fantastic weekend in an amazing setting with good weather conditions and excellent performances by our pupils," said Abberley Hall staff member Susan Rose, who accompanied the boys.

Edward Garnier of Tenbury Wells came second and Ed Rose of Worcester finished third in the junior fleet category.

"Both boys sailed exceptionally well. It was a huge expanse of water, so much bigger than they are use to, and lots of strong competition between the entrants. It was great for our boys to come home with a trophy each after a hard weekend's sailing.

"The boys are now entered into a week's national schools sailing competition in July at Deal in Kent along with 11 other children from Worcestershire so the weekend was good preparation for that," Susan added.

Pupils from Abberley Hall School are able to sail at Upton Warren with Worcestershire Schools' Sailing and Canoeing Association every Tuesday evening as an after-school activity.
