600 MILLION YEARS GEOLOGY TALK - 600 Million Years in 60 Minutes, is the title of a talk on the making of the landscape around Bishops Castle to be heard on Wednesday at 7.30pm in the newly restored town hall. The speaker is Andrew Jenkinson, projects officer for Shropshire Geological Society. Andrew explains, “For the past 12 months Shropshire Geological Society has been collecting together archive material about the Bishops Castle area to be deposited in the Bishops Castle Heritage Resource Centre. This project, funded by the All Our Stories section of the Heritage Lottery Fund, has also seen the creation of a building stones trail for the town and a tour of the wider area across the surrounding countryside. Meanwhile, as residents and visitors to the town will be well aware, the town hall has been enveloped in scaffolding for a complete refurbishment. Now open again, it will be the venue for a series of lectures. The first of these pushes back the history of the town’s surroundings to the deep past.” As Andrew explained, “this is not a scientific discourse on geology, but an attempt to show how today’s scenery relates to the rocks beneath the surface a story that takes us back to when the region was on the floor of a sea surrounded by volcanoes, near to the Antarctic Circle. We will see how, through time, our part of the Earth’s crust has migrated slowly northwards; how land and sea slowly changed positions with upheavals and volcanic activity that created the folded rocks and mineral veins of the Shelve area; when the Long Mynd became an island with a shell-strewn beach around it; and eventually how, in the relatively recent Ice Age glaciers and their melt water streams gouged out the valleys and rounded off hills we see today. Finally we will see how our predecessors used the surviving rocks of these ancient landscapes to build today’s town of Bishop’s Castle”. Tickets are free, but limited by the seating capacity of the town hall. Places should therefore be booked in advance. Check out the web site at to book on-line or telephone 01588 630023. Call Andrew Jenkinson on 07816 136272 for further information.

Clows Top District Gardening Club

JUNE, summer is here at last. This is a time of year when the gardener can begin to enjoy the fruits of their labours. Take time to stand back to appreciate the garden, and don’t let it become a chore. Weather is usually quite warm with the occasional thunderstorm, sun is now quite strong so time to shade the greenhouses to prevent plants getting scorched. Tender plants can now be safely put outside as there should be little fear of night frosts.

At April meeting speaker, Chrissy Ching, gave a talk and power point presentation on Potagers. Ideal for small gardens mixing flowers and vegetables together, similar to Victoria kitchen garden. These ornamental vegetable gardens are usually square or geometric designs with box hedging outlining the designs.

The club has number of trestle tables for sale if anyone is interested or if more information needed contact Marion Wilson 01299 270475.
