THE contribution made by more than 400 voluntary organisations in and around Ludlow needs to be recognised, according to the town's MP.

Philip Dunne has praised their work at the end of ‘Volunteers Week’ which has marked its 30th anniversary.

“Here in Shropshire we are fortunate to have many really committed local people who give up their time for free to support some of the more than 400 volunteer organisations in our communities,” said Mr Dunne.

“This includes supporting good causes, fighting for local issues and events or fundraising for national campaigns.

“Almost every week I am pleased to meet local volunteers who work tirelessly to raise funds and promote local issues.

"From food banks to arts groups, to medical and community ?centres, charities and sports clubs, we are very well served by thousands of volunteers.

“I recently visited Shropshire HomeStart, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, to see the tremendous work their volunteers do supporting young families across Shropshire.

“Last year I also undertook CPR training with local volunteer Community First Responders, who do an excellent job providing emergency medical care before an ambulance can arrive.

“Our excellent volunteer network is a testament to the strong community spirit in south Shropshire, and I congratulate and thank all those who spend some of their free time giving back.”

Figures from the Office of National Statistics calculate the value of volunteering in the UK at £23.9 billion. Among those volunteering on a regular basis, the most common activities include organising or helping to run an activity or event and raising money or sponsored events.

Sports organisations were the most popular type of group for which people volunteered formally.

More than half (52%) of those volunteering at least once a month gave time to this.
