HOMES and businesses in Tenbury will be hoping to get their hands on some of the additional funding allocated for flood relief.

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin, whose constituency includes Tenbury, has welcomed the securing of £190,000 in extra funds to help flood hit homes and businesses.

The MP wrote to the Government asking for extra cash after receiving concerns from local people that they were not being help by the emergency fund which was announced by Prime Minister David Cameron during a visit to the county in February.

Business Minister Michael Fallon has written to Harriett Baldwin confirming that £222,500 has been allocated to Malvern Hills District Council to help flood affected homes and businesses.

“I am pleased that my requests for additional funds have been accepted and a substantial amount of money can now be passed on to those who were badly hit by winter floods,” said Harriett Baldwin.

“The Prime Minister came to Upton and met with local people and told them he would ensure that this fund would help them.

"He was as good as his word.

“I hope that these extra funds quickly get into the hands of the people who need it most – the hard-working people who suffered owing to floods during the winter.

“I encourage anybody who hasn’t yet applied for assistance to contact Malvern Hills District Council as soon as possible.

“My work to secure permanent flood defences in other parts of the county continues and I have been keen to make the case for road improvements in Upton to try and keep it open for business all year round.

“This is some good news and I look forward to hearing further good news on major infrastructure improvements from the Chancellor in the autumn and at next year’s Budget.”

Officials from the Environment Agency have ruled out a flood defence scheme for Tenbury because of the cost but some help has been given to limit the damage that flooding would do to individual properties.
