LUDLOW Rotary Club is going to the dogs.

The charitable business group has gone barking mad as it plans the biggest doggy event of the year in south Shropshire.

Stokesay Court will host a dog fun day in July that will be the centrepiece of the charitable fund raising for the Rotary Club that made more than £30,000 for good causes last year.

But it will also be very different to 2013 when a charity sleep out at Ludlow College made £25,000 for charities that work with the homeless.

“That was the biggest single fund raising event that we have ever had so we have a hard act to follow,” said Rotarian Roy Major, who is leading the team that is organising the event this year.

Although the ‘sleep out’ was a great success it was decided to do something completely different for 2014 that would be more light hearted and appeal to the family.

“People will be invited to bring their dogs and just have a great day out,” said Roy.

“There will be an action packed programme of activities with plenty of chances for people to get involved.”

It is intended that there will be more than 40 different trade stands selling all kinds or doggy and non-doggy related products and services.

Ludlow Brewery has already been signed up to provide the beer tent.

The displays will include obedience, gun dog and agility with people having an opportunity to put their own dogs through their paces.

Hounds from the local hunt will also be on display, as well as a team of Siberian Huskies in harness.

There will be plenty of different classes ranging from the cutest puppy to the best vintage dog aged over seven years.

No concessions are being made to being PC with classes for the ‘prettiest bitch’ and the most mismatched pair of handler and dog.

One of the most popular competitions especially among the dogs is likely to be the one to find the fastest sausage eater.

People who attend will also get the chance of a tour of Stokesay Court which was featured in the film Atonement.

Money raised will be shared between a number of Rotary charities.

The event is on Sunday July 20. Tickets will be £6 for adults, £7 on the day and £4 for children and £5 on the day and there will also be a family ticket for two adults and two children that will cost £16 and £20 on the day.
