LUDLOW has begun 2014 with the shock news that one of its most iconic businesses is facing possible closure.
De Grey’s in Broad Street is in the middle of a consultation with its 40 staff about the future of the business.
Robbie Underhill the manager of De Grey’s confirmed that all options including closure are possible but was unable to say more until the consultation is completed on January 18.
“We are talking to our staff about the future and there may be redundancies and there may not,” said Robbie Underhill.
“One of the possibilities is closure but we cannot say any more that this stage.”
De Grey’s has belonged to its current owner since 1999 and has won various awards.
It is known as one of the iconic businesses of Ludlow with a tea room and bakery as well as nine bedrooms.
The timber building dates back to 1570.
De Grey’s has an array of accolades and was awarded five stars by the AA and Shropshire Tourist Board in 2012 and has been given a five star rating by ‘Visit England.’
It has received an Enjoy England Gold award for ‘exceptional quality’ of accommodation and service and an Enjoy England breakfast award.
The tea room offers the ambience of a bygone age with customers having a choice of cakes and pastries from the De Grey’s award winning craft bakery.
