LUDLOW MP Philip Dunne believes that cuts in fuel bills averaging about £50 will take some of the heat off people struggling to stay warm

The MP has welcomed Government plans to reduce energy bills by rolling back green levies and clamping down on tax avoiders to pay for the Warm Homes Discount scheme.

These changes are expected to save £50 off the average dual fuel bill.

“I am pleased the Government is taking steps to reduce energy bills for hardworking people in Shropshire,” said Philip Dunne.

“By rolling back green targets and clamping down on tax avoiders, this plan will help save people money on their energy bills without costing the taxpayer.

“This is not a gimmick that requires control of wholesale prices to work; it is real, workable cut for fuel bills.

“These latest measures will help ease the burden of fuel bills this winter, and represents the Government’s clear commitment to an economic recovery that benefits all.

“The Carbon Saving Target will be reduced by a third to 2015, with a new target set at a similar level to 2017.

“This new target will be made cheaper by allowing companies a wider range of options for meeting it. The Warm Homes Discount, which gives the poorest families a rebate on their energy bills, will be paid for by a crackdown on tax avoidance.”

British Gas has announced that these measures will mean the average British Gas dual fuel customer will save £53 in 2014.

The Ludlow Churches Together is concerned about expensive energy and other rocketing increases to the cost of living which has become a hot political issue.
