Crisis time as CAB call for funding in Tenbury
FEARS are growing for the future of the Citizens Advice Bureau in Tenbury.
The g roup that helped more than 1,000 people last year is facing a financial crisis.
Volunteers have made a plea to Tenbury Town Council for funding to support the group that works with some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
The CAB in Tenbury has already reduced the number of days that it is open each week in the town from two days to one and will be moving to Tenbury Library to cut costs.
Volunteers Jan Kelly and Peter Allen have asked Tenbury Town Council to provide a g rant to help enable the CAB to continue its work in the town.
Peter Allen said that the Tenbury branch costs £30,000 a year to run and is part of the Malvern Citizens Advice Bureau which is facing a serious financial deficit.
He said that the service in Tenbury is an outreach of the main CAB in Malvern.
“The concern is that it is necessary sometimes to cut off an arm to save the body,” he said but added that funding from the town council would not only help to safeguard the CAB in Tenbury but may enable two day opening again at some time in the future.
“We helped 1,066 clients last year and helped clients to get £250,000 in compensation or benefits that are spent in the town,” he added.
“A lot of vulnerable people are helped and we see a lot of debt problems especially among younger people.”
Jan Kelly told the town council that the CAB is able to offer independent and impartial advice that is not judgemental and provided people with options to help deal with difficult issues.
The main issues that people needed help with included debt, housing and changes to the welfare and benefits system.
“We help with form filling and some of them are incomprehensible even to the advisors,” she added.
She said that Tenbury CAB was unusual in offering a ‘walk-in’ service with no need for people to make an appointment.
