A VILLAGE in south Shropshire carries the dubious honour of being home to the grave of the last known sin eater in England.
Sin eating is not a special dietary requirement but was a practice in the border country in which someone volunteered to eat bread and drink ale across the body of someone who had died suddenly.
In this way they took on the sins of the deceased and it is a task allegedly undertaken by Richard Muslow who died in 1906 and is buried in the village.
It is the basis for an annual festival over the weekend nearest to the summer solstice which takes place this year from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23.
This year three days of music, film, art and craft will take place based around The Bridges pub with camping also provided locally for people that want to stay for the weekend under the stars.
More than 25 bands from all over the world will perform including Daniel Bachman who is travelling all the way from Virginia in the United States.
There will also be corn dolly workshops, the lighting of a 30 foot wickerman, a Sunday market and specially brewed ales from the local Three Tuns Brewery.
Tickets are £25 for the weekend and £10 for the day. For more information visit sineater.co.uk
