SUPPORT for community projects has won a south Shropshire brewery national recognition.

A series of donations to local causes and charities earned Wistanstow’s Wood Brewery a top national award for its community activities at BeerX, the festival of British brewing organised by the Society of Independent Brewers.

“We didn’t expect this so we’re absolutely delighted,” said managing director Edward Wood, who received the award from Toby Perkins, shadow business minister at the BeerX event in Sheffield.

“The brewery has made donations from special brews to all sorts of community organisations over the years.

“Most recently, we gave a fourfigure sum to the Wenlock Olympian Society raised from sales of WPB Athletes’ Ale, and we’ve donated significant amounts to bodies like the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, the Longmynd Hike organisers, Air Ambulance and the Flounders Folly Trust.”

This weekend, Wood is producing Twist Grip, a special brew to back the brewery sponsorship of the annual Vintage Motorcycle Show held in Wistanstow.

The beer will also be one of more than a dozen to feature at the first Plough Inn beer festival, which runs at the brewery tap at the same time as the bike event in the village hall grounds.
