Good causes reap benefits of Ludlow initiative

A GROUP that allocates public money to initiatives in Ludlow and south Shropshire has allocated nearly £30,000 over the past 12 months.

In the year, Ludlow and Clee Local Joint Committee has granted £27,290 to local community based projects.

The local joint committees were established on the formation of the Shropshire Unitary Council to make allocations on a more localised basis.

“This year Shropshire councillors and representative from the town and parish councils have awarded 21 grants,” said Vicky Turner, Shropshire Council’s community action officer for Ludlow.

The g rants have been given to a wide variety of g roups and projects throughout our area including providing afterschool hockey and training coaches for the Ludlow Swimming Club.

Ludlow Carers group has had g rants to help with trips out, St Laurence School in the town has been provided with bikes for youngsters to use and Clee Hill School has had a cob oven built.

New windows have been paid for at Ludlow Women’s Centre, help given to assist with the new building of Ludlow Boxing Club, for a new office and kitchen at Clee Hill Nursery School and microphones at Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Community events that have been helped include the Ludlow Youth Festival, a fireworks display at Gallows Bank and funding is promised for the Ludlow Fringe Festival in the summer and a planned Small Gardens Festival.

Joint local committee meetings are open to the public and made up of local members of Shropshire Council and representatives from town and parish councils.

There is a budget for community grants again this year with the closing date for applications on Thursday, May 9.
