Ludlow council tax to be cut

RESIDENTS in Ludlow and south Shropshire will have a cut in their council Tax in the coming year.

The charge will fall by four per cent in the former South Shropshire District Council area.

It is part of the fulfilment of a commitment by Shropshire Council to equalise the tax throughout the county.

For historic reasons the council tax in Ludlow and south Shropshire has for many years been much higher than in the north of the county.

“A number of years ago the Liberal Democrat-led South Shropshire District Council imposed a massive increase in the precept and this is a situation that we inherited,” said Martin Taylor-Smith who represents Ludlow on Shropshire Council where he is a member of the governing cabinet.

The cost for a Band D property will be about £1,216.

As the Advertiser went to press Malvern Hills District Council was debating a recommendation to increase its element of the council tax by two per cent adding £2.65 a year to a bill faced by a typical Band D property.

Next year’s proposed Band D figure for households in the town is set to be £1532.23.

Worcestershire County Council has decided to freeze Council Tax for the coming year.
