BISHOP’S Castle player-boss Andy Green says his players’ heads dropped as they got thumped 6-1 at leaders Ketley Town in Mercian League Division One.

The scoreline was only 1-0 to the hosts at half-time after Castle had twice hit the crossbar.

But Green’s team could not handle their opponents in the second-half and face another tricky test this Saturday away to second-placed Prees.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose 6-1 and we have got a good enough team to win the league, but I think that we are not just there at the moment,” said Green.

“If we had taken those two chances which hit the crossbar when it was 0-0, then we could have come away with three points, or at least a point.”

Castle’s goal came courtesy of a Luke Hicks penalty.

Church Stretton Town are five points clear at the top of the Mercian League Premier Division after a 2-1 win over Telford Juniors.

Aaron Gough, with a 30-yard screamer, and Ash Wells netted for Stretton.

Left-back Paul Smith played in goal for high-flying Stretton, who were missing their regular stopper, Neil Hughes.

Woofferton were beaten 4-1 at Ross Juniors in Herefordshire League Division, with their only goal coming through a Walt Bradley goal.

But there was more joy for Woofferton Colts, who thrashed Orleton Colts 5-1.

Chris Breakwell was the hero, scoring four goals, with Tom Worrallo grabbing the other goal.

Lisa Preece’s strike five minutes from time saw Ludlow Ladies beat AFC Telford 3-2 in the league cup.

Ludlow’s other goals came courtesy of a Kerry Taylor penalty and a Loz Smith effort, while Telford missed a penalty when the scores were level at 2-2.

NEWCASTLE came from behind to seal a 3-1 home win over Brecon Town in Mid Wales League South.

Jimmy Thomas, Scott Oxford and leading- scorer Carl Price all netted for Newcastle, who fought back to overcome a physical Brecon side in a feisty encounter.

Newcastle travel to Rhayader Town Reserves this Saturday and boss John Goodridge will be hoping for another gutsy display.

Brecon took the lead in last weekend’s match but Thomas levelled, tapping in Scott Oxford’s long throw.

Newcastle went ahead after the restart when Tom Bright’s cross was headed home at the far post by Oxford. And Newcastle wrapped up the points when Richard Williams’ free-kick picked out Price, who grabbed his 13th league goal this term.

FIRST-HALF strikes from James Williams, Toby Gittens and Alex Lombardi gave Tenbury Athletic a 3-0 win at Lichfield Vaults in a Herefordshire Sunday League Division One North bottom- of-the-table battle.

Second-bottom Tenbury picked up their second league victory of the season, against whipping boys Lichfield, who have now conceded 76 goals in just nine matches.

Sean Baldwin kept a clean sheet for Tenbury, who dominated possession in the second period.

CLEE Hill United will host Albrighton in the second round of the Shropshire Football Association Shropshire Junior Cup.
