I AM delighted to see that Shropshire Council has decided to consider changes to the parking strategy in Ludlow.

As residents and retailers will know, the current regime that allows free parking on the street in Ludlow on Sundays, while charging in car parks, means that the number of spaces available for parking on the streets is hugely reduced on that day because of cars not moving all day, and that the turnover of parked cars and, therefore, spaces is slow.

The proposed new charges will even out this anomaly and, far from reducing the number of visitors to the town on Sundays, will encourage more to use the car parks, with their reduced fees, whilst encouraging faster turnover on the streets as well.

This should help traffic flow and, hopefully, reduce the typical Sunday scene of cars going round and round looking for a free spot.

Parking in Ludlow is not expensive by today's standards and Ludlow's popularity will not be diminished by a small tweaking of the balance of charging. And, remember, an additional bonus will be free parking on Bank and public holidays.

The next move should be to introduce a park and ride for Sundays to allow even more visitors to take advantage of the town.
