HALF A century ago, a g roup of mop-haired young men from Merseyside were paid just £100 to play at a Tenbury pub.

The group honoured the commitment despite having just seen only their second single make its way to number one in the charts.

The Beatles went on to become the biggest band of all time.

Back in 1963 it was The Riverside Dance Club that booked the Beatles as well as other performers including Joe Brown and The Bruvvers, Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, Screaming Lord Such and Tommy Bruce.

It was a different world – before playing in the ballroom of the Bridge Hotel John, Paul, Ringo and George grabbed something to eat in the cafe opposite.
