One Direction star Liam Payne is heading for a top 10 entry in the charts this week with his debut solo single.

Liam, the last member of the boy band to release his own music, is currently at number three in the Official Singles Chart with his track Strip That Down, following its high-profile release last Friday.

Following a pattern set by his fellow One Direction stars, Liam will be the fifth and final member to hit the top 10 with solo music.

Harry Styles recently topped the chart with his debut solo single Sign of the Times, and his self-titled album reached number one last week.

Following One Direction taking a break last year, band members Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson have also been in the top 10. Niall’s This Town hit number nine and Louis’ Just Hold On peaked at number two.

Zayn Malik, who quit the group in 2015, last year topped the charts with his debut single Pillowtalk.

At the mid-way stage of the week, Liam’s single is just 325 equivalent sales behind the current number two, DJ Khaled’s I’m The One.

The track features Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne and Quavo, the latter also appearing in Liam’s hip-hop inspired Strip That Down.

Last week’s number one Despacito, by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, reworked with Justin Bieber, retains its position at the chart summit.

Shawn Mendes is at number four with There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back and Clean Bandit’s Symphony, featuring Zara Larsson, rounds off the top five.

Over on the Official Albums Chart, Ed Sheeran looks likely to return to number one with his album Divide, as Harry’s record has been pushed down to number three.

Linkin Park’s new release One More Light is at number two, just 2,400 combined sales behind Ed.

If Ed returns to number one, he will have enjoyed 10 non-consecutive weeks at the top of the charts.

Rag’n'Bone Man is still in the top five after weeks on the chart with his debut record Human at number four, and Erasure’s 17th studio album World Be Gone is at number five at the mid-way stage of the charts week.

The new charts will be officially released on Friday.
