There’s probably only one show on TV that could make a siege both funny and touching, and that’s Cold Feet.

As the comeback series wound up, there were loose ends being tied all over the place – a son coming out here, a couple of wedding proposals there – but that didn’t mean there wasn’t time for a big, grandstanding set-piece.

And that took the form of Adam and Pete, on a mission to an off licence to buy booze, getting caught in a siege with a biscuit-munching armed robber.

No, it’s fair to say we weren’t expecting that.

It was tense. Because we know the Cold Feet producers aren’t shy about killing off our favourite characters.

When the police arrived, Adam took the phone to negotiate.

Unfortunately they thought he might be the gunman, not one of the hostages.

Some weren’t having it though.

And it turned out…

Yeah, Adam finally managed to convince the robber to give him the gun, it turned out it was a replica anyway. Not so dramatic after all.

But it did lead to some wonderfully touching dialogue between Adam and Pete as they discussed the important things in their lives as the threat of death apparently hung over them.

It was one of many highlights in a particularly fine episode.

And the good news? We’ll be seeing them all again next year…
