As part of the Leominster Festival programme Arts Alive presents the award-winning show Call Mr Robeson; a Life, with Songs.

Nigerian born, Liverpool-based actor and singer Tayo Aluko presents a rollercoaster journey through Paul Robeson’s remarkable and eventful life, highlighting his pioneering and heroic political activism. A famous and successful singer and actor, Robeson became progressively radical and outspoken. He was branded a ‘traitor to his country’ during the McCarthy era in the US. Harassed and denied opportunities to perform or travel, he was finally summoned before the House Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950s.

Paul Robeson was a controversial figure and his unswerving pro-Soviet stance made him enemies even within his own circles, but he was undeniably a brave and leading figure in the struggle for civil rights in the US and the wider world.

Call Mr Robeson features much fiery oratory and some of Robeson’s famous songs, including a dramatic rendition of the iconic Ol’ Man River. It’s suitable for adults and teenagers.

"A stunning piece of musical theatre.... high quality drama, first class singing" Edinburgh Fringe Review
