PREPARATIONS are well underway and interest is building for a weekend of events celebrating the life of Shropshire’s poet postman, Simon Evans.

This year sees not one but two major Evans anniversaries, with August 10 marking 120 years since his birth and the previous day marking 75 since his death.

A weekend of walks, exhibitions, vintage themed teas and a concert by folk group Whalebone is planned to take place in and around Evans'hometown of Cleobury Mortimer from August 8-10.

Evans was best known as a BBC broadcaster so to mark the event the BBC plan to interview Mark Baldwin, Evan’s biographer, for the Radio 4 programme Saturday Live. The celebratory weekend has already been picked up by two national walking magazines The Great Outdoors and Country Walking, and is also featured in this month’s Shropshire Magazine.
