Curtain up on Ludlow Assembly Rooms’ new season

THE curtain has gone up on Ludlow Assembly Rooms’ new season with the publication of the spring 2010 brochure and, as always, the coming season promises plenty of varied entertainment – from drama to dance and from politicians to poetry.

Music comes in a variety of genres, starting in January with jazz from Lea DeLaria, a national celebrity in the States, appearing with her jazz quartet to perform songs from her superb new album, The Live Smoke Sessions.

At the end of the month, another up-tempo evening is promised with the return of the London Community Gospel Choir, who have performed at Glastonbury, on the soundtrack for Disney’s smash hit The Lion King and live on the pitch for the FA Cup Final.

There’s also Balkan gypsy folk from 3 Daft Monkeys, an appearance by Cara Dillon – “Quite possibly the world’s most beautiful female voice”

said Q Magazine – the City of London Sinfonia, saxophonist Courtney Pine and a modern Beijing opera, Chi2 – Monkey King.

March sees a visit by the evergreen Des O’Connor, a true showbusiness legend, with his unique brand of comedy, laughter and music.

Elsewhere on the diverse spring programme, there’s An Audience with Michael Portillo, controversial former MP for Kensington and Chelsea, who shares fascinating stories and takes audience questions.

In March, Mike Maran brings Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, an epic tale of love and war, to life with the help of two chickens, two aubergines, three puppets, a goat and, of course, a mandolin.

Contemporary dance arrives in Ludlow from CScape, with When the Shops Shut, an exciting and vivid blend of dance, theatre, film, poetry and music.

There’s lots on offer, too, for children throughout the spring months, with interactive children’s theatre from Image Musical Theatre’s production of A Little Princess, a family samba drumming workshop, lots of half-term fun workshops and the annual LADS panto as the group bring the flying carpets and evil villains of Aladdin to LAR in January.

For three days only, in mid- February, the auditorium will be transformed into an eco-friendly ice rink, made of state-of-the-art synthetic ice offering plenty of slip-sliding away for families.

For full details of all that’s on offer at Ludlow Assembly Rooms in the spring, pop into the box office and pick up a brochure, or visit ludlowassemblyrooms.
