Verdict: Superb workhorse, spacious, good build quality, smooth and flexible motor, more pulling power, competitively priced, five year/125,000-mile warranty.

WITH five-seat and four-door practicality, the double cab pickup not only serves as a daily workhorse but as a comfortable family vehicle. And for the business user there is the added advantage of useful tax concessions to make a purchase more attractive.

These versatile vehicles have become essential equipment on farms and for commercial use and manufacturers have been quick to respond to their rapid rise in popularity with new models and major facelifts.

While there is plenty of choice on the market, one of the best buys is the Isuzu D-Max which has replaced the Rodeo pick-up and now offers more appeal with a stylish and modern appearance, particularly at the front which helps to give the D-Max loads of presence. There is a new interior, a revised 160bhp 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine, and improved allround efficiency.

And showing the maker’s confidence and giving peace of mind to the buyer is an excellent fiveyear/ 125,000-mile warranty.

The D-Max range starts with a single-cab option while there are double cab models in Eiger, Yukon and Utah specifications.

All are well equipped with the popular Eiger having all-round power windows, Bluetooth air con, and big, heated and retractable mirrors. It also has the latest in traction and electronic stability control. This model sells for £19,250, plus vat.

The flagship Utah has the highest specification with leather seats and colour satellite navigation and like the other models can now be customised with a new accessory range.

Another major plus is that the towing capacity of the latest vehicles has been increased by 500kg to 3.5 tonnes.

On the road, the D-Max is a relaxing and enjoyable drive with a huge amount of torque or pulling power available which makes towing effortless for most of the time. And despite being wide and fairly long it doesn’t feel big or bulky to drive. In fact, it is very manoeuvrable and, with its power steering and excellent turning circle, parking is not a problem.

Across the range there is an automatic and six-speed manual gearbox with the manual being fitted with a fairly low first gear which is ideal for travelling over steep or very rough ground.

However, with a separate transfer box there are no worries when the off-road going gets tough.

On the highway the ride is quiet and composed with the twinturbo motor being smooth and flexible.

With 255lb ft of torque available from just 1,400rpm the D-Max pulls strongly almost from take off and there is plenty of midrange oomph for swift overtaking.

On the motorway the tall sixth gear makes for relaxed progress and improved economy.

For carrying work items the Isuzu has a robust and decent size pick-up bed while the interior is spacious with seating for five large adults and plenty of shoulder and head room.

The interior looks as though it will last a long time under heavy use. Like the outside, it is strong and well built with a clear dash and cabin lay-out. There is a lot of plastic on show which may not be to everyone’s tastes but it is very durable and well arranged.

The seats are large, comfortable and supportive and with plenty of adjustment available the driver can arrive at a good and commanding position.
