Planners' green light for housing

AMENDED plans for a controversial scheme to build 20 affordable homes in Bishop's Castle have been approved by district council planners.

The site, adjoining Grange Road, has been earmarked for the development of two and three-bedroomed bungalows and houses by South Shropshire Housing Association.

Councillors rejected the original plans involving the demolition of the Grange Road Community Centre and the adjoining warden's house.

Amended plans were submitted which involved demolishing only a part of the centre and the re-housing of the warden.

These plans were approved by the SSDC planning committee at this month's meeting.

The association, in its new submission, had also offered cash toward the provision of children's play equipment.

Bishop's Castle Town Council had objected to the new plans and argued the community room would still be lost, there would be severe traffic problems in Kerry Lane and there would be too many houses on one site.

Similar objections have been lodged by the town's civic society.

The Bishop's Castle Royal British Legion Women's Section object to the loss of the centre and increased traffic.
