£2m boost for sport

A NEW £2 million sporting facility at Lacon Childe will transform recreational activities in Cleobury Mortimer, says the school's deputy head.

Geraint Roberts believes the new provision will enhance sporting participation for the community, as well as inspiring the school's pupils to become involved in physical activity.

The new facilities include a multi-purpose astroturf games arena, tennis courts, two high-quality rugby pitches and a landscaped park area.

"The new facility is outstanding. It's a testament to what can be done if the will is there. The project has been about bringing sporting opportunities to the school and community and bookings are full," said Mr Roberts.

"It will pay dividends for years to come. The whole area is floodlit so members of the public can use it in the evening."

Two former pupils who have gone on to achieve sporting excellence were present at the school for the official opening.

Mr Roberts said: "We were delighted to have Jo and Tony Yapp here. They have both achieved impressive careers on the rugby pitch - Jo is the captain of England woman's rugby team and Tony is captain at Exeter. We hope that future sporting champions will be inspired."

Mr Roberts added that the scheme was not purely about developing high achievers.

"Although it is a centre for sporting excellence it is also about getting all pupils involved in physical activity and making it part of their life," he said.

A football festival was held to celebrate the event - with more than 100 pupils from feeder schools taking part.
