Victims are not forgotten

LUDLOW people will have a chance to send Christmas cards to victims of human rights abuses.

"This will show the victims that they are not forgotten," explained Stephen Dalton, from the Ludlow section of the Hereford Amnesty International Group.

He hopes that the mayor, Coun Graeme Kidd, and the town's rector, Prebendary Dr Brian Curnew, will be among those signing a card in Market Square on Saturday.

From 9am to noon, Amnesty International will have details of individuals together with greetings cards and stamps, in exchange for a donation.

The victims range from a gospel singer in Eritrea who is believed to be imprisoned in a metal shipping container for refusing to abandon her Christian faith to a survivor of gang rape in Gujarat in India, who is pursuing a fight for justice.

The charity runs a similar campaign every Christmas. This year it will also include individuals in the Sudan, Algeria, Belarus and Brazil.

Mr Dalton said: "As well as offering a great source of hope, the cards send a powerful message to the authorities that the eyes of the world are upon them, and we will not sit idly by while someone's rights are abused."
