THERE have been fresh calls for traffic calming measures close to a junction of five roads on one of the main routes into Ludlow.
Vehicles coming off the A49, at the Rocks Green roundabout, travel along Henley Road.
The route veers to the right into New Road by the former Raven Inn. At this point, Sandpits Road and Gravel Hill come in from the left and Dodmore Lane from the right.
Former Ludlow town councillor and South Shropshire district councillor Michael Holland has been campaigning for years to do something about the junction.
"I've travelled across that junction nearly every day since 1980 so I do know it rather well," he said.
He would like to see a sign showing the speed limit and the proximity of a dangerous junction.
In addition, he says, the sign should give the speed of the approaching driver.
"If that doesn't slow motorists down, I would be very surprised," he suggested.
"Traffic doesn't keep to 30mph. There are no signs warning motorists as they approach the junction.
"Traffic comes up the hill at New Road at 35-40mph. Parked traffic in New Road only makes things worse."
He added: "I do think the traffic needs to be slowed down. I always keep to 30mph and traffic queues up behind me.
"There should be a warning of a difficult junction. Ludlow is really crying out for something."
Peter Corston, who is both a district and a county councillor, wants similar traffic calming to that along Bromfield Road by Ludlow CE School. That stretch has 20mph signs and humps.
"It's a question of now far the cash can go," he said.
"But when people's lives are in danger, something has to be done."
