AGM: At the South West Shropshire Historical & Archaeological Society (SWSHAS) AGM, chairman Chris Train reported on another successful year. He thanked the officers, committee and members for their support, and congratulated the new editor of the SWSHAS Journal, Patricia Theobald, on the 2005 issue. He also commended the work of the affiliated Lydbury North Field Group. A good series of meetings had been held, two enjoyable outings, and the Pride of Place exhibition at the Michaelmas Fair. The finances were in good order, thanks partly to the Local Heritage Initiative grant, which was due to end in 2006. It had already been agreed to raise the subscription from next year.
Chris Train thanked Alan Hurley and Caroline Earwood, who were both retiring from the committee, and said he hoped others would put their names forward for co-option. He then welcomed members of the Bishops Castle Heritage Resource Centre (BCHRC) team, who had mounted a display. Bernard Edwards first outlined the history of the House on Crutches building and how it had been converted into a heritage resource centre. Sue Mascord, heritage access development officer, showed how the building had been transformed into a useful space for meetings and study of the archives. Sally Chappell then illustrated a selection of the House on Crutches Museum and BCHRC collections and demonstrated the interpretation of handwriting.
David Preshous thanked the BCHRC team and congratulated members on all they had achieved.
Janet Preshous presented BCHRC with two collections, documented and deposited on behalf of SWSHAS - the late Miss Molly Puckle's original photographs, dating from 1902; and the prints of Emmanuel Beddoes' s glass plates (with more than 100 other items) from the late Leslie Beddoes. Next Wednesday, Chris Train will host his chairman's evening in the Community College, at 7.30pm, with a talk entitled Blue Remembered Hills, a Walk round Housman's Shropshire.
COFFEE MORNING: Last month's Abbeyfield coffee morning raised £40 for Hope House Children's Hospice. .
FAIR: Bishop's Castle Primary School holds its Christmas fair tomorrow (Friday), at 6pm. As well stalls, games and competitions, there will be Christmas quiz sheets on sale, 50p, with a closing date of January 6.
